COMMON INDOOR PLANT PESTS

SPIDER MITE

Spider mites are small arachnids that colonize plant foliage, feeding on the plant juices they suck from the undersides of leaves. They grows to 1/2 -1mm long, and can be red, brown,  green, or yellow. There are two species of spider mite that commonly  attack the cannabis plant the two spotted spider mite tetranychus urticae, and the carmine spider mite, tetranychus  cinnabarinus. Very young two spotted spider mite are usually. Young adults have eight legs and are green, with two brown spots on either side of the back that grow to almost cover their backs as they develop.

Young carmine spider mites are indistinguishable from their two-spotted counterparts. Adults, however, are any of several shades of red and develop different physical characteristic. Both species reproduce by laying  eggs on the undersides of the leaves and at the joint. The eggs are either laid singly or spun into a fine, honey dew like webbing which is a sure sign of an infestation, and hatch in five to 10 days. Other symptoms of infestation include chlorotic and necrotic spotting on the leaves where the plant fluids are being drained.
